Cookies

WHAT IS A COOKIE?

Cookies are small plain text files that are sent to your browser by websites and stored on your computer. They can perform various functions from website traffic analysis to remembering your preferences or targeted advertising.

For general information on what cookies are, and how to control them on your computer, see allaboutcookies.org.

A more technical explanation of HTTP Cookies can be found on WikiPedia.

TYPES OF COOKIES

There are two main types of cookies; persistent and session.

Session cookies only last for the duration of your visit to the website and are not stored between browsing sessions. They may be used, for example, to tell the website that you have successfully logged in.

Persistent cookies stay in your browser for a finite period of time (specified in the cookie), and are used for purposes like remembering preferences or whether you’ve been to a website before.

Broadly speaking, each of these two types of cookies also comes in two flavours; First-party (i.e. set by the website you’re visiting) and Third-party (i.e. set by another website on behalf of the website you’re visiting). A well-known example of a third-party cookie would be those set by ad networks like DoubleClick.

WHY DO BANNER NEED TO USE COOKIES?

Like many companies, at Banner we use both session and persistent cookies on our website for three main purposes:

  1. to gather aggregate site traffic information in order to improve our website, determine which parts of the site visitors are interested in and help us figure out which parts we need to change, remove or improve
  2. to remember which visitors have filled out forms before so you don’t have to provide the same information every time you want to download a piece of ‘gated’ content, e.g. a whitepaper
  3. to identify which visitors (who have already provided us with personally identifiable information, e.g. when signing up for our newsletter) are visiting our website, clicking through from our email newsletter, or downloading ‘form gated’ content.

None of the first-party cookies we set from b1.com contain personally identifiable information.
