Digital Couch No. 9 #digitalcouch

They say the busier you are, the less you get done! November has proved to be a busy month with loads of announcements from the likes of Samsung, Apple, Facebook, Sony, Google… the list goes on. This week’s DC is all about productivity (at work and home), so don your specs, and read on.

F-mail

First a Hollywood blockbuster, then the world! Facebook has stepped up to challenge Google and Yahoo with it’s ‘not an email client’ email client. Facebook is giving its 0.5 billion users an ‘@facebook.com’ not-an-email-address address, and launched a single portal for SMS-ing, tweeting and emailing through the Facebook framework.

The world’s best presentations. Really?

The ever-excellent Slideshare is running its annual World’s Best Presentation contest. Browsing through, there are some really nice decks with interesting content. You can easily see the influence Presentation Zen and Duarte Design have had (all for the better) in the war against death by PowerPoint. I particularly like the following:

But…

The thing that strikes me looking through most of the entries is that the presenter is almost entirely superfluous. Surely presentations, at their best, are about presenters making a connection with an audience – not simply a set of slides that can be read through (however pretty they are).

Experience is everything

After having it on back order for what seems forever, I’ve recently got Adaptive Path’s new book, Subject to Change. And so far, so good.

Broadly speaking the thrust of it is that you can’t stop things changing but if you start from the perspective of delivering a great customer experience you will stand a better chance over time. Of course, working out what ‘great’ means for your customers is not always simple. And then the real trick is actually doing it. The focus of the book is primarily on product design but the principles go further.
